The Wisconsin Speleological Society (WSS), a grotto of the
National Speleological Society (NSS), is a nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to cave exploration, restoration, study and tours. The WSS and volunteers have been actively involved with the removal of glacial sediment deposited by glaciers in Wisconsin caves at Ledge View Caves/Nature Center, Chilton, WI, Cherney Maribel Caves County Park, Maribel, WI and Crystal Cave, Spring Valley, WI for many decades. If you would like to learn more about the WSS and become a member or active volunteer, please click this tab.. Join the WSS. Spelunking vs. Caving
Spelunking is the exploration of caves for recreational purposes or just for fun. Spelunkers do not collect scientific data. Spelunkers are not trained in advanced cave exploration techniques. People who enter caves with the bare minimum of equipment are said to be spelunking. Once a spelunker gains some experience and training he is said to be a "caver."
