Governor Walker Proclaims August Caving Month in Wisconsin

MADISON – Governor Walker has issued a proclamation designating August 2013 as Show Cave and Caving Month in Wisconsin. The proclamation particularly recognizes the work of the Wisconsin Speleological Society, an organization dedicated to the exploration, study and protection of caves and landscapes throughout the state.

Representative Paul Tittl (R-Manitowoc) will deliver the proclamation to the society during its monthly meeting on Saturday at Maribel Caves County Park. The meeting begins at 10 AM.

"Caves and the show cave industry provide wonderful recreational, educational and economic benefits for our state," said Rep. Tittl. "The proclamation recognizes the tens of thousands of hours volunteers have performed in the discovery, exploration, education, science, management, search and rescue, conservation, and protection of caves and karst-related features."

Cavers don’t always get the recognition that others do, because their work takes place underground. However, their efforts enrich our lives significantly.

"I have always enjoyed caves," said Tittl. "We have some wonderful caves in Wisconsin, including some right in our area."

Manitowoc area residents can enjoy caves at Cherney Maribel Caves County Park just off I-43, half-way between Manitowoc and Green Bay, and the Ledge View Nature Center, W2348 Short Rd, a few minutes south of Chilton.

Tittl added, "As the thermometer continues to soar in August, why not do something cool - visit a cave. Average cave temperatures are in the 50s."
